Tribal Empower 2025 Highlights

It was a pleasure to attend the Tribal Empower Conference 2025 at Sheffield Hallam University—not just for the sessions and networking, but for the reminder of what our work in Higher Education technology is truly about. Walking through the campus, I saw today’s students making their way to lectures and tutorials, and it struck me again: they are the heart of everything we do. Our role is to help institutions serve them better, with systems and processes that enhance their educational journey.

A Meeting of Minds from Across the Sector

The Tribal Empower event always delivers immense value for Amos. Institutions from across the UK, Ireland, and even further afield—this year including Malaysia—come together to share ideas, challenges, and success stories. It’s a rare opportunity to hear directly from the staff at the coalface, working every day to deliver the best possible student experience.

What came through strongly in conversations was the reality of doing more with less. These are challenging times in Higher Education. It’s not enough to just “keep the lights on”—institutions are striving for innovation, efficiency, and measurable impact. As vendors, we have a responsibility to deliver exceptional value for money, platforms that provide tangible business benefits and a solid return on investment.

Cloud Journeys: No One-Size-Fits-All

One of the most insightful threads was around institutions moving to the cloud, and the varied paths they are taking. Some are exploring rigid, true SaaS models, while others are looking for highly configurable platforms that integrate with best-in-class applications, without sacrificing speed, reliability, or scalability during peak periods like enrolment and results release.

From the conversations I had, the latter approach seems to resonate most. Flexibility, interoperability, and resilience are key. Interestingly, I also met teams embracing a more “standardised” approach—aligning their processes to fit system baselines rather than customising endlessly. This willingness to change business processes can be a huge enabler, and Change Management services play a vital role here.

Untangling the Legacy Knot

A recurring theme was the challenge of legacy integrations—often undocumented, built by long-departed developers, and reliant on direct database connections that cloud deployments simply don’t permit. While these can be barriers to cloud adoption, they’re far from insurmountable.

With the emergence of AI tools capable of reverse-engineering and interrogating code, we can now surface the embedded business requirements and reimplement them in cloud-friendly ways. What once seemed like a mountain is starting to look like a manageable hill.

Showcasing Amos Connect

One of my highlights was presenting the Amos Connect platform to representatives from over 20 institutions. We ran a real-time demo showing how we’ve already leveraged the new Data Access and Event APIs released in Tribal SITS Vision v11—just one month before the conference.

Middleware like Amos Connect remains essential for transforming and orchestrating data workflows, but thanks to applications that “play nicely” together, the implementation effort is shrinking. This means institutions can reach “time to value” faster, turning ideas into live benefits in weeks, not months.

A Sector of Passion and Purpose

The Higher Education sector is filled with people who care deeply about delivering an exceptional student experience—removing friction, supporting learning, and creating environments where good students become great.

Despite the backdrop of restructures in many institutions, I left Sheffield feeling upbeat and optimistic. The connections I made and the conversations we started will continue, and I’m already looking forward to the next Tribal event in 2026.
